TSA Pre✓™

I think I have mentioned it before, but I do travel quite a bit for work.  I do a lot of the same things as other frequent travelers – folding garment bags, airline status, hotel loyalty, etc – they all add a few perks to an otherwise undesirable experience.  However, none of those perks are even in the same league as TSA Pre✓™.  I may name my first child “Pre Check” I’m that in love with it (and hey, at least it’s better than naming your kid “North West”…Thanks Kanye).  But  seriously Pre✓™ gives me a warm feeling in my pants…  From the time I walk in the airport (assuming no checked luggage) to the time I’m through security is about 5 minutes.  There is no line, seriously.  The most people I have ever seen going through at once was three, and that was at O’Hare.

Why is it so amazeballs?  Besides having basically no line, you get to leave you jacket, hat, belt, shoes, watch, etc. on…  You do not have to take anything out of your bag, including liquids and your laptop.  Think about that!  All you have to do is put your luggage on the belt and have it go through!  That’s it!

How it works:

TSA Pre✓™ is a component of the government “Global Entry” program which expedites entry into the country from land, sea and air.  Upon completing the application, they will run a background check (my understanding is they are quite stringent about a clean record) and schedule an interview for you to make sure your aren’t a terrorist.  Mine lasted 20 minutes and since it was pretty obvious that I just wanted to make my life easier, I was quickly on my way.  Last step was to attach the traveler ID to my airline so it shows up on my ticket.  NOTE!!! If it’s not on your ticket you don’t get to use it!  Cost is $100 and it lasts for 5 years.  Currently in use at 40 or so airports.  Big Snaps…

UPDATE:

This was written about a year ago, and in that time, TSA has ruined the system.  It is most prevalent in Sky Harbor (Phoenix), and on certain days it is quicker to go through the regular line than it is to go through PreCheck.  I have seen way more and more traffic in these lines that is not driven by people that are signing up.  In an effort to complain to TSA about the number of people being sent through the PreCheck lanes (that did not pay for the service), the agent I asked blamed the airlines claiming that they were the ones letting people have the status.  I went directly over to my airline counter and asked for an explanation.  I received a completely different and more believable story.  She informed me that TSA expected to gain more revenue from the PreCheck program and the numbers have come in below expectations.  In order to try to get more people to sign up, they have been giving the PreCheck status to large numbers of low risk travelers for free; hoping that they enjoy the perks and then sign up.

Two points to this 1) Low risk travelers are typically seniors and people with kids – in my opinion the two slowest groups of travelers.  They can’t figure out the shoe thing, they start taking all their stuff out, etc and it takes fooorrrreeevvver… 2) It appears that TSA agents are blatantly lying to travelers because either they don’t know where the directive is coming from or they are getting some many questions that they are deflecting the blame to the airlines.

Regardless, there needs to be a business traveler line at the airport, or someone needs to figure out how to expand services like “Clear” to have availability across the country.

Buceo 95

Living in New York can be a delectable dream for some people because there are so many varies of food and amazing restaurants; but I don’t think anyone has ever said, “you must go to the Upper West Side, it is a culinary delight!”.   Outside of a few better than average restaurants, the UWS is littered with every variety of Asian (Chinese, Thai, Sushi) that is all pretty mediocre, a solid Cuban spot, Pio Pio, and then some OK Mexican wannabe spots.  Personally, I’m not a foodie, not even close.  In fact, I was the person that was pissed I couldn’t get Wendy’s or Taco Bell without going too far south or driving to Jersey…  What can I say – sometimes I just want 4 chicken soft taco with 2 packs of “Fire” sauce…  However, I have eaten at a lot of nice restaurants and know when food is better than just good.  Buceo 95 is just that, it’s amazing.

My wife and I found this Tapas restaurant a few weeks into living there on 95th and Amsterdam and it quickly became our favorite restaurant.  The menu has a variety of vegetables, fish and meat as well as some cheeses and pastries.  Everything is ridiculously flavorful and since they are small plates that are reasonably priced, we always had 5 or 6 dishes between the two of us.  The only time I was disappointed was when I ordered the shark (I believe it was a special).  I really only ordered it because I wanted to say I ate a fucking shark, but it was just okay…  On the beverage side, they have a full bar and a good wine list, but the sangria is the way to go.  Goes down too smooth – you’ll go through a pitcher and be tempted to order another.  No reservations that I’m aware of but they will call your cell phone when your table is ready and we never had to wait longer than 30 minutes or so on the weekend.  Drinks, food and tip for two run a reasonable $100 – $125.  Snaps…

Jaybird Bluebuds X

I have an weird habit of trying a bunch of headphones and getting annoyed when they aren’t what I expected.  This ultimately leads to multiple trips back to the store to return them.  For workout headphones it was worse.  For a long time I had this cheap pair with a long cord and ear wraps.  Not great sound, but as long as you tucked the cord under your shirt they worked great.  After two years I finally had to put them to rest after sweat ravaged their insides.  I would have just gone out and got another pair of those for $25, but apparently they don’t make them anymore… F Balls…  So commenced my search.

At first I just shlepped around with the 1st generation iphone headphones, but since they are made for short people, I had one too many instances of doing a pull-up or hanging knee-ups and having the cord pull the phone out of my pocket, disconnect and drop heavily to the ground.  What followed was me screaming at it like a red-headed step child.  (For those of you who are going to suggest the arm band… don’t.  They suck)   I looked at the Dre. Beats Power Beats in-ear, but the reviews were all along the lines of “these fall apart”, which I kind of already knew since I had the control talk set.  Those only lasted a year without working out in them.  I did not look at the over-ear Beats, because let’s be honest; if you are working out in giant studio headphones, you look like a douche trying to show off your headphones.  That and there is no way in hell they would stay on if you were doing serious activity – again reference back to my “douche” comment.

Then I moved on to my trial and error portion.  First try, the Iron Man brand, in-ear headphones (~$40).  I used them once and returned them.  They supposedly “lock” into your ear, which is bullshit, because last time I checked my ear canal didn’t have the same squared off grooves as the headphones.  You can’t adjust the size for your ear hole either.  They suck, plain and simple.  Next up was the Jabra Sport Bluetooth headphones ($100).  The Bluetooth feature is great because you don’t have to worry about the cord getting in the way, but these things won’t stay behind your ear without a lot of adjusting.  Not only that, but the actual earpiece is flat so it doesn’t have any noise reduction or strong sound quality.  I could have done without amazing sound, but if I’m running I don’t want to constantly be screwing with my headphones.  They were also returned immediately.

Finally, I bought the Bluebuds X ($169).  I’ve never seen a television commercial on normal tv for these, but saw them on the LTF channel at the gym.  They are pricey, but are freaking great.  They are also Bluetooth, have the buds that block out background noise, good sound, adjustable sizes and you can change how they fit behind your head.  The fin hooks that fit under the part of your ear above the canal, keep them in place.  You can jog, jump rope, etc and they stay put.  Plus, you can just set your phone on the ground and not have it bouncing around in your pocket.  Lastly they have about 6 – 8 hours of battery.  I’m sure if you were working out for more than 2 plus hours straight they may get uncomfortable, but for me, it was exactly what I wanted.  Snaps.

Stella & Chewy’s

Like most people, I have a dog and I love him.  He’s one of the family, plain and simple.  However, he’s a German Shepherd and a finicky little bitch when it comes to food.  Note: this only applies to dog food – he’ll eat anything people food including popcorn and yellow gummy bears (that’s right the yellow ones.  I won’t even eat the yellow ones and I love gummy bears…bastard).  Anyway, I have gone through at least eight different types of dry food, all without success.  I first tried the “he’ll eat eventually” approach.  Three days later, that still wasn’t working and he looked more like cancer patient than guard dog…  I progressed to tempting him – this long process included dog treats, pieces of meat and then eventually sprinkling shredded and parmesan cheese.  The best part was that he would lick the cheese off the food and then leave it there and then look at me with a “that’s the best you got” stare.  Finally, it got to hand feeding.   After I realized that I was hand feeding my adult dog like a infant I had to stop and say fuck that.  Not only that, but he was diagnosed with arthritis and is now over eight years old so I wanted to put natural stuff in his body to maybe keep him alive longer.  I started doing the Raw food diet thinking that he would like it since he eats chicken, beef and everything else I cook.  It was a step up, but it was messy, difficult to get a hold of and required too much prep.  Even then, he still needed to be persuaded.   I did some research and found this stuff:

IMG_0930

It isn’t cheap at $29 for the large bags, which last about four days (varies by dog size), but it is seriously puppy crack.  There’s around six different flavors and they all have the same result – looks like he wants to eat through the bottom of the metal bowl.  I even started feeding him the rabbit one, just so he could know what the bunnies he was chasing in the back yard tasted like.  Lastly, they are easy.  Portioned patties that you just thaw overnight and drop in the bowl.  Done.  Snaps…

Renaissance Chicago

I travel to most of the major cities in the US and frequently I end up staying in an average Marriott that looks like the rest.  The Renaissance Chicago is definitely one of the nicer ones.  The location is amazingly convenient, especially if you are there on business.  The beds are less like the old mattress at your grandma’s house that she’s had since WWII and more like something you would pay to put in your home.  Take a look at the view and tell me it’s not worth a second look.  Oh and the towels are legit too… Sounds stupid, but I like not drying myself off with sandpaper.

I personally wouldn’t live in Chicago, but if I’ve got to suck it up, this isn’t a bad place.  Snaps…

Just Outstanding IPA

Just Outstanding is a crazy good IPA brewed out of Kern River Brewery.  Definitely strong at almost 7% ABV and seemingly hard to get a hold of.  Last place I had it was an Irish Bar just outside of the Gas Lamp San Diego.  There was a line out the door for the walk-up beer line simply because of Just Outstanding.  Snaps…
